Well, kids, I won't talk a lot today. 'Nymphomaniac Vol. II' is like a mirroring of the first part: somehow it looks the same, but you know that it' totally different.
Without some special enthusiasm, I'll try to explain my point. And don't worry: I won't spoil anything.
If, suddenly, you've been disappointed because of only few sexual scenes in the first part, be sure that you'll have enough of sexual cocktail in the second movie.
Personally I didn't feel anything. Even more! I've been a bit bored.
Joe is laying on a coach. Attractive sadist destroys her body systematically, with a cruel violence. Joe waits for the next meeting like a girl for her second date: really, really impatiently.
But just like the Gainbourg's character: I don't actually feel anything while watching this. I'm not the target, but for 100% there's a girl/woman who's watching this with horror/lust and she's disturbed/closing her eyes.
Lars von Trier put everything he could in the film. The second part of 'Nymphomaniac' is like a duck, filled with different vegetables and fruits, and some of them destroy taste of the other one.
The director tried yelled in a face of traditional moral values, society values, ignored every value on Earth, but, as for me, it was a very simple and old approach, which is completely useless in the era of free all kind porn.
Especially when after 'Nyphomaniac' all you really-really want is to go to sleep or have a walk, but definitely less you want is actually to have sex.
About the good things...
Charlotte is beautiful and talented. I really would love to see her in Trier's future projects, because she's his lucky fairy.
Second thing I really like in the second volume (and actually in the whole trilogy) is a beautiful links to one of his previous films.
That's all I wanted to say. Without conclusion, without points. Watch it, think about the film, or leave it alone and enjoy the first part.

I'm curious to watch this film but I'm also dreading it in a way. A mix of intrigue and dread. I just remember those uncomfortable feelings I had after watching Melancholia and Antichrist. I know I'll watch it though when I'm ready for it.
ReplyDeleteI guess it's a wise and good decision, to be true. I know what you mean, when saying 'uncomfortable feelings'. As for me, after Melancholia on a wide screen I was depressed for a while. But for Antichrist I've been ready. Although, some scenes stuck in my head.
DeleteTrier uses a lot of 'dirty' psychological stuff...
But:) The first part of Nymphomaniac is totally ok. And I guess this is the only part of the film that can be seen:)
I'm not sure if I want to watch this or not. I don't think I will because of the mixed opinions you and I both seem to share on it. And well, when I'm unsure I tend to lean towards the no...

Oh:) The first part is a nice one. Full of aesthetic, good dialogues and, maybe it will sound strange, but there's even some things, that you can learn from the film. But the second part - no. Boooooring. And it's strange,, that movie with so many hard scenes made me yawn:)
