Isle of Dogs (2018)

Wes Anderson is in the very personal list of my favorite directors of all the time. For years I had a poster of Moonrise Kingdom on my wall. I also kept a frame from Fantastic Mister Fox as a lock screen wallpaper on my iPhone. Anderson's talent and perfectionism was always a huge source of inspiration for me. Therefore, this post will be more as an ode to Wes Anderson and his latest film - Isle of Dogs (preorder on Amazon | iTunes | Google Play).

The story takes us to imaginary Megasaki City in Japan. Dog-flu spreads throughout the city. Although a local professor Watanabe had almost found a cure for the flu, evil mayor Kobayashi still signs a decree to exile every single dog to Trash Island. But who would know, that the story will take a different turn when a little boy, Atari Kobayashi (the orphaned nephew of the mayor) will steal a plane and fly to Trash Island to search his dog Spots...

I remember, when the movie started, I couldn't speak at all. My eyes didn't know, whether I watch an animation or a 'real' film. You see, Wes Anderson is more than just a perfectionist. He's a magician. A very patient magician with an incredible imagination and attention to the details.

Here's a small video about the Isle of Dogs in making:

I believe, dear readers, in a modern world, full of possibilities and high technology, every single person who has a decent smartphone can make a movie. Huge cinema corporations producing tons and tons of different animation movies every single year. But only a few of them have a heart. Isle of Dogs is not only about attention to the details, technical implementation, famous people involved, huge budget etc. It's about Wes Anderson putting himself into his work. When a director (and a screenwriter, and a producer in one person) reveals himself through his work. Wes is a pure artist. That's why there are so much love and privacy in his work.

Isle of Dogs is full of a great humor, sometimes bitter-sweet jokes, sometimes sad irony and all that are ingredients to create a great and touching dramedy.
The movie is about friendship, sacrifice, humanity, AND humaneness. Unfortunately, in the real world, we lack the last one.

In the movie, dogs have human qualities. They are sarcastic, compassionate and very funny. On the other side, humans are a bit silly, helpless and weak. And I like that because it's a good chance to look on our world under a bit different angle.

Exceptional work, unbelievable stop-motion animation, great storytelling, a talented way of creating multi-language (English and Japanese) piece, unforgettable soundtrack etc.
And, by the way, I would gladly hear the feedback from those who live in Japan. I'm very curious!

Just one little last thing...If you read title very fast then you will hear the main motto and the idea of the movie. Isle of dogs, isleofdogs, ilovedogs. Wes put all his love and respect to this animals into this wonderful movie and brought some more love into this mad and dark world.
And we should appreciate it.
