Yesterday I wrote about ''The Babadook'' (read here). Today I continue with reviewing the best horror films and going to talk about David Robert Mitchell's work ''It Follows'' (2015).
Forget about everything and run. Leave your family, friends, leave your clothes, your smartphone, your favorite book. Just run. Forget about sleep, living in comfort, forget about food, shower and evening in front of a TV. Start living in a nightmare. Run. If you stop, it will get you. And then you're gone.
I started to write about this movie and then I felt paranoid for a second. 'It Follows' is one of the most (if not the most) creepy, disturbing, outstanding films I've ever seen. At the same time, it looks beautiful and aesthetic. Wonderful.
Imagine horror film, that looks like nothing you have seen before. There's no ghosts, no exorcism, no weird cursed houses, no witches, no psychos etc. Imagine if someone could film your nightmare, with all those gruesome and unexplainable things, that happening there. And those terrible people, whom you have probably seen in a crowd, just for a second, but their faces stayed with you forever.
The film info of ''It Follows'' looks ridiculous and even funny: just after having sex, a teenage girl is haunted by something horrible Sounds like a b-category movie, right? If I would read an info before watching this movie I would never ever watch it. Because it sounds like a joke, and the only thing I want to do is laugh and make more jokes about it. However, even if the movie info sounds totally ridiculous to you, try to forget about it, because this film will give you nightmares and for the next few days it will make you paranoid everywhere you go.
I think there's something deeper. In a very specific way, this film shows us the terrible and heartbreaking story of sexual diseases and abuse. 'It Follows' authors point on a very sensitive topic, that we usually afraid to talk about. And I'm very happy, that it is possible to transmit very important position though suspense and horrifying atmosphere in the mass-cultural movie. And the whole team that has been working on ''It Follows'' did a very good job.
But not only the storyline and the ethical aspect are unique and important here. Storytelling and the whole picture looks very beautiful and neat. I could literally fill this post with 100 more frames because this film looks like a hipsterish Instagram account with lots of gorgeous photos in different genres and locations. I could literally watch it again and again.
And the official soundtrack is just magnificent. You can try it right now and never stop listening. Here's the link to listen ''It Follows'' OST on Youtube: click!
''It Follows'' is a wild, ambitious, outstanding try to create a new kind of horror movies, explore the corners of our mind, that we have never thought about. This film splashes out depressing, gruesome, disturbing, irritating atmosphere.
I highly recommend ''It Follows'' as your 'main course' on Haloween's (or any other) night.
