Last year, I published a post about a few movies I would highly recommend to watch on Halloween. Well, this year I prepared 8 films and divided them into two categories. So, if you have a plan to spend that night at home and make some movie marathon, I'll be honored to help you in choosing some good material to watch. Because let's be honest, there's a lot of terrible horrors out there and I'm sure you don't want to spend your time on those.
So, jump in! It's going to be a pretty long, but absolutely great list of movies to watch on Halloween's night.
CATEGORY I
The Classic
Hereditary (2018) by Ari Arister
One of the most discussed movies of 2018, one of the best horror movies of a few past decades and a damn well-made piece of art. Ari Arister's full-length debut is not just a typical horror, it's an absolutely terrifying and mysterious story of one family, the plot is packed with details, talented acting, and metallic aftertaste. It was already named "as good as "The Shining", and I might agree or disagree on that, but I doubt, that I'm going to rewatch it (I've seen "The Shining" at least 15 times) because it's simply too disturbing.
"Hereditary" is fresh, mind-blowing and a perfect choice if you want to tickle your nerves, but also get some serious aesthetic satisfaction.

The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015) by Robert Eggers
Another beautiful example of a stunning debut and another dramatic story of one family. "The Witch" is like a mix of all the best (or the worst?!) Grimm Brothers' fairy tales with beautiful Anna Taylor-Joy in the main role. The movie is full of visual images and symbols, flavored with old English language, melancholic foggy atmosphere, and a huge meta-context. Believe me, after watching this movie, you'll never look at some animals in the same way again.
"The Witch" is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. Beautiful, sometimes shocking, thought-provoking film.
Believe me, just watch it and it's going to haunt you for a week or two.

Oculus (2013) by Mike Flanagan
The film tells us a story of a woman trying to prove her brother, that just came out of a psychiatric clinic, that everything that happened with their parents 11 years ago was done by an evil supernatural power that lives in an old mirror...
"Oculus" is made in a very interesting way and full of great and unexpected ideas in it. It's scary as hell, well-played and sometimes even ironic.
I would easily give this film 7/10 and upvote. Nice, solid and worth watching.

Annihilation (2018) by Alex Garland
This Netflix's "child" instantly stole my heart and took an honorable place in my "Favorite Horrors" list. "Annihilation" is not like any other horror movie: it gives the viewers a completely new perspective, new meaning of horror and definitely tickles the imagination. Short description: a scientist joins a group of researchers to participate in a secret expedition into a mysterious and foggy zone, where the laws of nature are changed and don't work correctly...
"Annihilation" is a slow-burn film with a unique storyline and form, supported with a great soundtrack and a strong female cast. The movie is full of meta-meanings and gives some food to think.
It's beautifully scary and will definitely expand your horizon.

"Monsters are real, and ghosts are real too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win." -Stephen King
Hounds of Love (2016) by Ben Young
Not all of the horror movies need to be full of supernatural stuff, possession and demons, paranormal activity etc. Sometimes just one human is enough to make your back sweat from horror (like in "Saw" franchise, f.e.).
The story of "Hounds of Love" is happening in the 80's. A teenage girl called Vicky is getting kidnapped by a creepy couple. The only thing she can do is to stay smart and still to trick her abusers and escape from the horror...
This movie was truly breathtaking. The whole set-up of the movie is a true perfection. "Hounds of Love" is a brutal, filthy and disturbing. The monsters are more than just real and they act unexpectedly and dirty.
Scary AF, disgusting, but nevertheless - good.

Goodnight Mommy (Ich seh ich seh, 2014) by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz
When you're out of ideas what to watch - try to dig in German or Austrian cinematography. Sometimes, it's possible to find hidden gems there. For example, have a look at a crazy thriller-horror-drama movie "Goodnight mommy". The plot takes place in the suburbs, in a private house of a famous TV star. She's a mother of cute twin boys Lukas and Elias (fun fact: the kids-actors have exactly the same name) and just made a plastic surgery...But for some reason, the twins start to suspect, that the face under the bandages is not their real mom...
If you like "The Babadook" - you're going to enjoy "Ich seh ich seh" as well. Amazing in its scariness movie, with a great play and awesome storyline.
"Goodnight mommy" will satisfy even an easy-bored viewer.

Triangle (2009) by Christopher Smith
"Triangle" is like a Greek myth filmed as a movie and showed on a big screen. A group of friends, that survived after a storm in the open sea and got onto a huge cruise liner, that was passing by them...Well, sometimes it's better to stay where you are...
But it's not about the people, friendship and survival or forsakes ghost ships. No. "Triangle" is about responsibility, parenthood, and death.
This movie is surreal, brain-twisting and very thought-provoking.

We Are Still Here (2015) by Ted Geoghegan
And finally, "We Are Still Here", a gorgeous example of how someone can create an authentic horror movie with a low budget, but with lots of passion. This movie was presented in 2015, but it feels and looks like from the 80's. It's a grindhouse movie, full of references to the immortal horror classic, with an unusual haunted house and very cute characters in it.
"We Are Still Here" is not a typical horror and definitely not for everyone. But if you're bored, educated and your tastes are diverse - I really encourage you to watch this high-tense, violent and extremely atmospheric movie.
